Hi from Matt at JA,
The standard location is sitting vertically on the port side of the engine at the back. It's quite low down right beside the back corner of the oil pan. It's a great place to have it if this engine is in a car, but in a boat it can be a little messy and tough to get at if there is a seat or a bulkhead right beside it.
Some of those models had a remote filter kit and the filter was mounted upsidedown on the port exhaust manifold - I suspect you would have found it by now if it were there.
I usually take two good quality kitchen garbage bags, double them up, and position them under the filter. Crack the filter and let the excess oil drain into the bags. Then undo the filter an lower it into the bag as well. Close up the bag and carefully remove it, usually out in front of the engine - careful not to rip the bag open on a sharp piece of fiberglass!
Lube gasket on new filter and hand tighten only. I have had to pull engines right out of the boat to remove filters that were overtightened on the chev engines. That's an expensive oil change.
Hope this helps, feel free to reply if you have further difficulties or questions.
Thanks, Matt
