Iam working on a 1983 mercruiser sterndrive maybe you can help me. I just replaced the lower unit and it goes into foward and nuetral but not reverse. But i can hold the shift shaft with my fingers and it will go into reverse when i let go it falls back out into nuetral. There is no more adjustment in the lower shift cable. What might be the problem.

If you have already tryied this. Make sure you have the lower in foward gear. Look at the upper coupler when you shift the remote and make sure the rotation is the same way you are turning the lower shift shaft. Shift the lower shift shaft from forward to neutral to reverse several tiem to make sure it is working. Turn the prop shaft as you are shifting to make sure it goes in and out easily. That cog inside must be in the correct spot to fully shift all three ways. Just take your time and you will get it. You can reach me here at JustAnswer and request me under the experts and you can reach me. Hope this helps.

Thanks

Pat
